O H I O | Open Heart Inspiring Others

Travel: Akron/Cleveland, Ohio

For those that do not know, I went to school in Ohio. I attended The University of Akron (Go Zips!!!) and graduated in 2005. 2.5 years after graduation I moved from Ohio to Virginia. Because I have developed lifetime friendship with some of my college friends and I have a goddaughter that resides in Akron, Ohio, I still visit Ohio at least once every 2 years. It used to be once a year, but most of my friends have moved away from there to other states. Since I graduated, I never really been back on campus. I hear about all the changes (like new football field, buildings, gym...) they've made on campus but I haven't really seen it. So for the 4th of July weekend, I decided to take the Mr. on a tour of my old stomping ground, since he has never been to Ohio. This also gave me the chance to see all the changes that have been made on campus.

What I Wore: 4th of July

Hello Everyone!! Hope you guys had an awesome weekend.. I'm still recovering from mine. As I mentioned in my previous post (Electric Summer), I went to Ohio for the weekend. I'm still working on the "travel" post for that trip. It was a fun and somewhat educational trip. Learned a lot about football, toured my Alma Mater (The University of Akron) and met up with friends in downtown Cleveland.

Travel: N I G E R I A 2014

6.27.2014

A little bit over 2 weeks ago, I lost my dad..... Still not ready to talk about it yet, but it is well. The purpose of this blog post is to share a few "sewing related" pictures with you that I took while I was in Nigeria for my dad's funeral. We had to find a tailor/seamstress that can sew our clothes, for the funeral, in ONE DAY. My sisters and I went to Gbagi Market in search of a seamstress and found the amazing lady in the picture above. She literally made 5 outfits (3 adult women and 2 girls) in just a few hours. She did use her assistants, but I was still amazed of how quickly she finished.

Divorced, Party of One!!! (Part I)

2.05.2010

Left work early because of the snow storm, so I was able to catch The Tyra Show today. Lol. Today's show was focused more on divorced women and how to help them move forward. There were people in the audience that had divorce parties in order to express their "freedom", some cut off wedding pictures, destroyed their wedding dresses, and some even shred their wedding certificate. While watching the show I started to realize how Every divorce situation is different and that everyone cope with the hurt/pain differently.

As some may know, I am a divorcee. Married "technically" for a year and a half, but was only happy for 1 year during that marriage. Being married to my best friend was one of the most amazing feelings I've ever had. I couldn't have asked for anything better. After 1 year of what I thought was a good marriage, everything turned upside down. Literally!!! It was like one day I was on cloud 9 and the next day I was in Hell. I couldn't believe what was going on in our marriage, I couldn't believe "IT" can happen to me. I felt so lost, hurt, betrayed, heart broken, and so many other feelings I've never felt before. Even after all of that, I tried to work things out and put my marriage back together, but it was too late. My husband, my best friend, and the love of my life was gone. He had given his heart to someone else...We decided to get a divorce and go our separate ways. Our divorce was final the day before my 25th birthday.

As soon as that divorce paper was signed, I got into my car and drove from Ohio to Philly, crying the whole time, asking God, "WHY???"....why these things had to happen. But even though I was crying because I was sad, I was also crying tears of joy. It was kinda weird, I FELT FREE!!!!!!!! I wanted to celebrate my freedom. I wanted to hug God and thank him for saving me. It felt like I was giving a second chance to live again. I didn't feel free because I wanted to be single again, I felt free because as soon as I signed my name on that divorce paper MY HEALING began. Remember when I said that I was only happy for 1 year of my marriage, I was very very unhappy for the last six months of the marriage. It was so painful that it felt like someone is constantlly stabbing at my heart. I thought I was going to die. But God is Good...He didn't want to see his child go through that much hurt that he rescued me and gave me life. Someone told me once that "God Hates Divorce"....and I said, "I know, I feel so ashamed." Then they explain that God is not angry or disappointed at me because I'm divorced, God hates divorce because he doesn't want to see his children go through so much pain. He loves us so much and feels our pain.

I'm just glad I'm on God's side. I will talk about how I coped after the divorce in another post. But just like the guest of The Tyra Show, I wanted to celebrate my freedom/divorce, but my way of celebrating my divorce was to finish my MBA, move to a new state and start a new life. You won't feel free until you understand that God is with you ALWAYS and getting a divorce is NOT the end of your life. You have to see it as a way to start over....do things you've always wanted to do. Go back to school, travel, and definitely meet new people. Remember to ALWAYS keep GOD first and surround yourself with positive and encouraging people. Most importantly, LOVE YOURSELF, you can't love anyone if you don't love yourself first.

Travel: DIY Pencil Skirt Swimwear Cover-Up

7.31.2013

What I Wore: ATLANTIC CITY

A couple of weeks ago I was scrolling through the Instagram pics from the people I follow and noticed a picture of Rihanna in a bikini wearing a white-mesh tube/pencil skirt cover-up. I thought it was cute, a neat way to cover-up without really covering up. It was different... So I saved the pic in my "To Make" pile...
A few days later, I walked into Joann Fabric looking for patterns sale and the first thing that caught my eye was this white-mesh knit fabric. WINNING!!!. I knew exactly what I was going to sew with it, so I purchased a yard of it.

Pretty Girls Sew Along: April

Theme: Spring

Pattern: McCall's 7757

Hello Beautiful People.. Happy New Month! If you don't know already, Pretty Girls Sew's Monthly Sew Along is baaaack. Our 5th Year Anniversary is this Month, So we decided to do an oldie but goodie.. If you'd like to join our upcoming sew alongs, make sure to follow @PrettyGirlsSew on Instagram. May Sew Along is now up.

Let's talk about this midriff top tho.. Even though, I almost NEVER show my midriff/belle/fupa/love handle (except for this time), I was excited to make this top. I didn't even hesitate.. I just started looking for fabric and decided to wear it while on travel, in Houston. The top is so romantic and the print was giving me Tropical Vibes.. Probably one of the coolest outfit I've ever made. And I'm super proud of myself for wearing it and taking pics to share with you all.

Hair: Bobbi Boss Yara Lace Front by Elevate Styles

PATTERN REVIEW: M7757

Pattern Description: Very loose fitting off the shoulder tops have elasticized neckline and waist and sleeve variations. A, B: Ruffles. Loose fitting pull-on pants have elasticized waist and pockets.

Pattern Sizing: I couldn't find my size, so I purchased the pattern size L-XL and altered the pattern to fit my size. A lot of people said the pattern runs big.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern once you were done sewing with it? Not exactly. The fabric I used made it look a little different.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Absolutely, I sewed the top and pants after work one day.

What did you particularly like about the pattern? Love the top variation. It's also very comfortable and stylish.

Fabric Used: Burnout Organza, from Joann's

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:  No design changes, just took out an inch or so from the side seams so that the garment can fit me better. I also chose not to add pockets.

Would you sew it again? Yes, would love to sew it in other cool fabric.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes, perfect for beginners.

Hope this inspired you to make your own version.
Thanks for stopping by..

xo, Ye

Travel: Philly Fabric Tour

6.08.2014

Last week, I had a chance to go on a Fabric Tour in Philadelphia, with The Sassy Sewer.. It was an amazing experience.. I spent a lot of money on Fabric, but not as much as I thought I would have spent. So I'm good. Lol I went with my sewing instructor (Blondell), her sewing friends, and other Sassy Sewer students. It was great to be on the trip with ladies that have an extensive knowledge in sewing.. Every time I'm around them, I just watch, pay attention, and soak in all the knowledge they're sharing. I learned a lot from them and I love the fact that I can share ideas with them and they give me feedback.

DIY Yarn Dyed Emerald Maxi Dress

7.30.2013

Travel/What I Wore: Atlantic City
McCall's 6744 Misses' Dress

This would be the 3rd maxi dress I've made and probably the hardest to make out all three. It was hard not because of the pattern but because of the fabric I chose (see below). The pattern was pretty easy to follow, the directions are straight forward. I would recommend it for beginner sewers. I chose a striped jersey fabric, which I absolutely love, but matching the stripes was the most challenging part of this DiY. The maxi dress feels great on and drapes nicely. It also has a long frontal slit and a loose bodice. My plan for this dress is to wear it to the beach pretty soon. ;)

Pattern Review (M6744)

Description: Pullover dresses have bodice variations, elasticized (seamed) waist, and narrow hem. View A and B: fitted bodice. View C and D: mock wrap, very loose-fitting bodice with elasticized shoulders.

Fabric Used: Yarn Dyed Rayon Blend Jersey Knit Stripe from Fabric.com; Color - White + Emerald. It is a semi-sheer knit fabric.

Pattern Sizing: I cut out the smallest size, XS, because I didn't want it to be too loose.

Were the Instructions easy to follow?  Yes

Likes or Dislikes about the Pattern: I like that the pattern instructions are easy to follow. Not a lot of pieces to cut out.

Pattern Alterations or Design Changes made: I took a few inches off the hem and made sure I matched my stripes

Would you Sew it again? Definitely.. I just ordered some fabric so that I can sew it for my Mom.. She wants one without the slit.
