Travel: DIY Pencil Skirt Swimwear Cover-Up

7.31.2013

What I Wore: ATLANTIC CITY

A couple of weeks ago I was scrolling through the Instagram pics from the people I follow and noticed a picture of Rihanna in a bikini wearing a white-mesh tube/pencil skirt cover-up. I thought it was cute, a neat way to cover-up without really covering up. It was different... So I saved the pic in my "To Make" pile...
A few days later, I walked into Joann Fabric looking for patterns sale and the first thing that caught my eye was this white-mesh knit fabric. WINNING!!!. I knew exactly what I was going to sew with it, so I purchased a yard of it.

DIY Yarn Dyed Emerald Maxi Dress

7.30.2013

Travel/What I Wore: Atlantic City
McCall's 6744 Misses' Dress

This would be the 3rd maxi dress I've made and probably the hardest to make out all three. It was hard not because of the pattern but because of the fabric I chose (see below). The pattern was pretty easy to follow, the directions are straight forward. I would recommend it for beginner sewers. I chose a striped jersey fabric, which I absolutely love, but matching the stripes was the most challenging part of this DiY. The maxi dress feels great on and drapes nicely. It also has a long frontal slit and a loose bodice. My plan for this dress is to wear it to the beach pretty soon. ;)

Pattern Review (M6744)

Description: Pullover dresses have bodice variations, elasticized (seamed) waist, and narrow hem. View A and B: fitted bodice. View C and D: mock wrap, very loose-fitting bodice with elasticized shoulders.

Fabric Used: Yarn Dyed Rayon Blend Jersey Knit Stripe from Fabric.com; Color - White + Emerald. It is a semi-sheer knit fabric.

Pattern Sizing: I cut out the smallest size, XS, because I didn't want it to be too loose.

Were the Instructions easy to follow?  Yes

Likes or Dislikes about the Pattern: I like that the pattern instructions are easy to follow. Not a lot of pieces to cut out.

Pattern Alterations or Design Changes made: I took a few inches off the hem and made sure I matched my stripes

Would you Sew it again? Definitely.. I just ordered some fabric so that I can sew it for my Mom.. She wants one without the slit.
