It's an honor to be the Official Blogger Affiliate for All Things Ankara Fashion Week DC 2014 (ATAFWDC). Thank you Nikki Billie Jean, founder and editor-in-chief of All Things Ankara, for asking me to be a part of something this amazing. I'm super pumped and excited, and can't wait to see some great Ankara Fashion. If you are in the DMV (DC, MARYLAND, or VIRGINIA) area, you should definitely come out and support. DC Nights: Ankara Jumpsuit

What I Wore: Ankara Jumpsuit 
McCall's Pattern 6969


Hi Everyone! I wanted to quickly give a review about this fabulous ankara jumpsuit I made. I actually made it about a week or two ago but didn't have anywhere to wear it to, until this weekend. Ola "#thebae" and I went to DC to celebrate one of my friends' birthday. After the birthday dinner, at SEI, Ola and I decided to take a stroll at the National Mall. I love walking at the National Mall at night, it's pretty quiet and peaceful. My friends and I used to hang out there a lot when I lived in NoVA. So I was super excited to share that experience with Ola.




PATTERN REVIEW (M6969)
Ok back to the jumpsuit.. It is semi-fitted with a front button closure. It has elastic at the waist and lower edge. I cut out a size XS of view C. It was pretty easy to make and the directions were pretty straight forward. My favorite part of the jumpsuit was having the elastic at the hem of the pants. It made the whole outfit look super hip. 

Fabric Used: Ankara

Pattern Alteration: I didn't change anything on the pattern, but after I put on the jumpsuit, I didn't like the look with the top button closed. So I opened it and fold both sides over to make a lapel.



...by the way, I made my jumpsuit using the Juki Excite HZL-G210.

Double Collar Ankara Dress

So, I've kinda of been slacking when it comes to sewing. I lost my "sewing mojo" for a min and didn't feel like making anything. I'm still not sure exactly what happened and why.. Any who, I've been making simple garments, like skirts, to help gain my sewing mojo back. Making this dress helped me realized that I Am BACK!! Well I'm kinda.. almost there..

It is amazing that this is my last blog post of the year 2013.. Looking back to the beginning of the year, I have come a long way and have grown a lot. I just THANK GOD for HIS Protection, Guidance, Support, and LOVE for me. A lot of GREAT things happened this year (Faith, Love, Family, Friendship, Business, and Career wise) and I am super excited and looking forward to seeing the GREATNESS that will come out of 2014. What I Wore: Memorial Day


On Memorial Day, I woke thinking about what I wanted to wear to the "All Things Nigerian" event in Silver Spring, MD. I wanted to wear something comfortable and simple. Something I can throw on top of my jeans/skirt with some flats and keep it moving. I decided to make the cross-back tank top below using Ankara Fabric. It was quick and easy to make and only took me about 1.5 to 2 hours to make from cutting the finishing.

Ankara + Two Tone Yellow Chiffon

Laura Ashley - McCall's Pattern 5972 Dress


This dress was made in a day because I put it aside for so long, trying to avoid working with chiffon. It was made for a 50th birthday party. It's a very classy yet fun dress.. Definitely my style.



Pattern Review (M5972)

Description: Fitted dress with lined bodice, darts, neckline variations, waistline seam, back slit opening, side zipper closing and above mid-knee length.

Fabric Used: Ankara + Two Tone Chiffon Yellow from Fabric.com (Here)

Pattern Sizing: I cut out a size 8. Fits perfectly.

Were the Instructions easy to follow? Yes, very easy...

Likes or Dislikes about the Pattern: I love the style.. No dislikes

Pattern Alterations or Design Changes made: I just added an inch to the length. And did a narrow hem for the chiffon. 

Would you Sew it again? Yes, I will..Once I feel like dealing with chiffon again. Lol I want this dress in a solid color.

What I Wore: Ada weds Uche
Butterick Pattern 5987


Hi Everyone! Happy Monday!! I just wanted to quickly review this butterick pattern before I forget and move on to my next project. I made the dress for one of my friend's wedding last week. Congratulations to the Newly Wed. :) This fabric was chosen by the bride as her Aso Ebi (I explained what Aso Ebi means HERE). As always (smh), I waited until the last minute to sew this dress. To me specific, I stayed up all night the day before the wedding sewing this dress. I'm so glad it came out okay and I was able to wear it.

Lined Ankara Jacket

Vogue Pattern 8887 Jacket



This was my Level Seven project for YCMI sewing class at The Sassy Sewer. In this level, I learned how to make a Lined Blazer/Jacket, Welt Pockets, bound buttonholes, covered buttons and much more.  



Pattern Review (V8887)

Description: Lined jacket with shoulder pads and flaps.

Fabric Used: Ankara + Blue Lining fabric from Joann Fabric

Pattern Sizing: I cut out a size 4. 

Were the Instructions easy to follow? Yes, but Blondell at The Sassy Sewer showed me an easier way to attach the lining.

Likes or Dislikes about the Pattern: The directions were pretty clear but I would not recommend this pattern for beginners. 

Pattern Alterations or Design Changes made: I did covered buttons and added an extra button to the closure.

Would you Sew it again? There's a possibility..

DIY Ankara Shorts

McCall's 6756 Misses' Shorts



I am in the process of making my Level Seven Blazer for Sewing Class, using Vogue pattern v8887. My instructor at The Sassy Sewer, Blondell, suggested that I make a pair of shorts to match the fabric.. At first I thought it would be too matchy matchy, but I decided to do it anyways. I chose to use the McCall's pattern 6756. I had to do some grading, fitting and added like a quarter of an inch to the length. Lol But it looks really nice and I can't wait to wear it for my sewing class graduation. Whoop Whoop!! ;)


Pattern Review (M6756)


Description: Semi-fitted shorts have waistband, pocket variations, and mock fly zipper. 

Fabric Used: Ankara

Pattern Sizing: I cut a size 8 for the hips and graded up to a size 12 for the waistband. My lower waist is 3 inches wider than this McCalls pattern waist size.

Were the Instructions easy to follow?  Yes, I was scared to do the fly. But the instructions were so easy, I did it with ease. The first time I made pants (See Here), I sewed the fly to the front of the pants.

Likes or Dislikes about the Pattern: I like that the shorts are fashionable and the fly was easy to do.

Pattern Alterations or Design Changes made: I graded up as explained in Pattern Sizing. After the pants were sewn together, before adding waistband, I had to take off some inches at the waist so that there won't be a gap in the back of the shorts. Also, I did a 1/4 inch hem instead so that I can have a little bit of length (it really made a difference). And lastly, I didn't add the pockets because want the shorts to lay flat on the sides.

Would you Sew it again? Yes, I'll sew another one with lace over lining.

Cold Shoulder Ankara Dress with Pockets

This is my submission for the Pretty Girls Sew September Sew-Along. I was chosen as the Pretty Girl Sew of the Month.. Thanks PGS!!! ;) Please see the pattern review below for details about the fabric and pattern used. 





Pattern Review (Simplicity 2406)

Description: Knee length Misses' Dress with Cold Shoulder Sleeves; pattern designed by Cynthia Rowley. Click HERE for other Cynthia Rowley Fashion Sewing Pattern Collection: Simplicity Patterns.

Fabric Used: Wax Print Fabric (Ankara) made by Vlisco; purchased at Obokun African Fabric & Design, Hyattsville, MD

Pattern Sizing: I cut out a Size 6

Were the Instructions easy to follow? Yes, but the sleeves are a bit tricky. You'd have to read it carefully so you won't miss any steps.

Likes or Dislikes about the Pattern: I like the different variation of the sleeves and dress lengths. I chose this sleeves option because it makes the dress stand out more. No dislikes..

Pattern Alterations or Design Changes made: No pattern alterations and I excluded the belt. I was going to take in the dress even more at the side seams and also remove the pockets, but I changed my mind. Wearing the dress with a little room in it and excluding the belt turned the dress into a shift dress. :)

Would you Sew it again? Yes...
