Double Collar Ankara Dress

So, I've kinda of been slacking when it comes to sewing. I lost my "sewing mojo" for a min and didn't feel like making anything. I'm still not sure exactly what happened and why.. Any who, I've been making simple garments, like skirts, to help gain my sewing mojo back. Making this dress helped me realized that I Am BACK!! Well I'm kinda.. almost there..

As you all know, I love to be challenged. I love making garments that seem easy but will make me sweat a little.. Lol. For me, this dress was one of those. It looked pretty simple and straight forward to make, but one of the most challenging thing (for me) was sewing those corners on the front section of the dress. I actually almost gave up, but thanks to my seam ripper I was able to undo and redo those corners until I was satisfied with what the looked like.

I made the dress in one day and wore it to my friend's 30th birthday dinner at Fogo de Chao that evening. Other than the dress coming off my shoulders, once in a while, I loved it. Next time, I'll add something to hold the back together, so it won't slip off my shoulders.

Pattern Review (M6602)

Description: Fitted, lined dresses (close-fitting through bust) have double collars, seam detail, and invisible back zipper, and vent.

Fabric Used: Wax Print Fabric (Ankara) made by Vlisco; purchased at Obokun African Fabric and Design, Hyattsville, MD.

Pattern Sizing: I cut out the Pattern Size 10

Were the Instructions easy to follow? Yes, but they should have explained how to sew the corners. I also got a little bit confused with the vent, so I finished it the best way I knew how to. :)

Likes or Dislikes about the Pattern: Love the style, especially the double collars in the back. The only thing I like were the instructions.. They were more detailed in some parts than the other.

Pattern Alterations or Design Changes made: No Alterations or Changes. I just free styled when it came to finishing the vent in the back.

Would you Sew it again? Probably..

  1. Gorgeous! I love it! The color combination is awesome! And that back "collar" is just perfect! I have this pattern, and I tried to make it last year, but gave up, because those corners weren't coming out right for me... I guess I'll have to try again! Lol!

    Great job!

  3. Wow this is lovely. I actually started making this dress a few months back. I cut all the pieces but lost interest in putting it together. I guess that happens sometimes. You have inspired me to complete the dress. It looks fabulous!
