Sew Urbane by YS

8.28.2014

Hello Everyone! So I changed my blog name... O_o Lol I've been thinking about changing my blog name for a while now. I just didn't like the names that I've been coming up with. I wanted to make sure that whatever name I choose is a name that I'm still going to love a year from now.

Why?
Why did I change my blog name? I changed it because I wanted my readers to know what my blog is about as soon as they visit the website. www.YetundeSarumi.com was cool because I was branding my name and I wasn't sure what direction I wanted to take my sewing/blog when I first started. But now that I focus more on sewing and sewing related things, I wanted people to know what my blog is about as soon as they get here. :)

Who?
Who came up with the name? My wonderful Sew-Sister, Coco of Needle Thread and a Prayer, came us with the name.. I knew that my blog is mainly about Fashion Sewing and Styling, so I wanted a name that combines both of my interest. I came up with Sew Styling, Sew Styler, and Sew Stylish. I presented my ideas to a few of my sew-sisters and "#thebae", they loved it but then Coco said, "What about Sew Urbane?". And of course I loved it. It's Different, it's Unique, and it represents everything that my blog is about. Thanks Coco!

What?
What does Urbane mean? Urbane means reflecting elegance or sophistication. Or being polished, poised, polite, and confident. I love the meaning because these represents who I am and what I want want my blog to be about. Thanks again, Coco! lol

How?
How did I change my name and re-brand myself and still stay connected to my supportive readers/followers? Thanks to Ola aka "#thebae", Olumaechi Fotos, he did it all. Of course, I was able to change my other social media site names all by myself (except Facebook -- They wanted me to show a utility bill with Sew Urbane on it before I can change my Page name. Smh). Ola changed my website address but the problem was that my readers were not be able to find my new blog because my old blog address, www.yetundesarumi.com, was no longer in use and everything I ever linked back to my old blog address were being redirected to the a site that was shut down. Anyway, long story short, Ola did his magic and now my old and new (SewUrbane.com) web addresses are connected. Thanks Ola!

Where?
Where else can you find me? I mostly hang out on Instagram, but you can also follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Tumblr

Hope that explains it all, for those that have been asking.. As always, thanks for stopping by.

Iro and Buba: 2 ways

8.25.2014

What I Wore: Church :)

Hello Everyone! Hope you guys had a wonderful weekend. Mine was great. Helped my friend moved and then spent the rest of my weekend in New Jersey. I was in Jersey spending time with my new adorable nephew.

I actually made this iro (top) and buba (wrap skirt or wrapper) and wore it a few months ago (See Here). The first time I wore it (left pic), I tied the iro "wrap skirt" into a tulip style skirt. It was kind of a funky and sassy look. It was a new twist to a traditional look. I wore the outfit again the 2nd time (right pic), and decided to change up the way I tied the iro to make the look more traditional.

I loved both look but my favorite is the 2nd look. It was more classy and gives a cleaner look. Which look is your favorite?

For My DiY Fashionistas; Here's how I made it.
Buba "Top": Vogue Pattern 8984; I'm hoping to do a tutorial on how to make it without a pattern soon. Hopefully in the next couple of months.

Iro "Wrap Skirt": I cut 2 yards of fabric. Hemmed the Cut-Ends so that it won't fray. And added ties at both ends (used as a belt to secure the iro after it's wrapped around you).

DC Nights: Ankara Jumpsuit

8.17.2014

What I Wore: Ankara Jumpsuit
McCall's Pattern 6969

Hi Everyone! I wanted to quickly give a review about this fabulous ankara jumpsuit I made. I actually made it about a week or two ago but didn't have anywhere to wear it to, until this weekend. Ola "#thebae" and I went to DC to celebrate one of my friends' birthday. After the birthday dinner, at SEI, Ola and I decided to take a stroll at the National Mall. I love walking at the National Mall at night, it's pretty quiet and peaceful. My friends and I used to hang out there a lot when I lived in NoVA. So I was super excited to share that experience with Ola.

PATTERN REVIEW (M6969)
Ok back to the jumpsuit.. It is semi-fitted with a front button closure. It has elastic at the waist and lower edge. I cut out a size XS of view C. It was pretty easy to make and the directions were pretty straight forward. My favorite part of the jumpsuit was having the elastic at the hem of the pants. It made the whole outfit look super hip.

Fabric Used: Ankara

Pattern Alteration: I didn't change anything on the pattern, but after I put on the jumpsuit, I didn't like the look with the top button closed. So I opened it and fold both sides over to make a lapel.

...by the way, I made my jumpsuit using the Juki Excite HZL-G210

Get Excited! JUKI Excite!!

8.15.2014

Review: Juki Excite HZL-G210
Computerized Sewing Machine

Hello Everyone!! Hope you guys are having a great day.. I'm so "EXCITED" (pun intended) to introduce to you the JUKI Excite HZL-G210!! This is one of the best sewing machine I've ever worked on. It literally sews like butter. The first word that came out of my mouth when I first used it was, "WOW". The sewing machine is AMAZING and it does amazing things. Read on to see the features..

A few weeks ago I attended a Fabric Savvy class at The Sassy Sewer. While I was there, I saw the JUKI Excite HZL-G210 on display and immediately started asking Blondell, the instructor, about it. Long story short, the next day I received a call from Blondell, she said that I can come and pick up the sewing machine, give it a test run, and see if I really like it. Thanks Blondell for the opportunity.

HOW EXCITING
The best way to describe the Juki Excite is that it's fast, saves time, easy to use, and like I said before, it sews like butter. I didn't even need to read the manual or watch the DVD to use it. It was pretty straight forward and self explanatory. There are so many things I loved about this sewing machine, with one of my favorite being the ability to sew light to heavy material. It's perfect for large project like sewing denim, vinyl, or any hard to sew material you can think of. This was perfect for me because I love working with different types of fabrics. Using the speed control, you can adjust the stitching speed from 90 stitch per minute (spm) up to 900 spm. Amazing!

NEEDLE + BUTTONHOLES
The Juki Excite has an automatic needle threader and 37 needle positions. It has a One Step Buttonholes with 8 different types of buttonhole variations. There's no need to measure your button in order to figure out the length of the buttonhole. Just place the button in the button holder to set the buttonhole length, press the start button and it automatically sews the buttonhole for you. (see video)

AUTO THREAD TRIMMERS
With the auto thread trimmers (another favorite) , all you have to do is push the button (with the scissors icon) and you can trim the top and bobbin thread instantly. You never have to worry about where your thread cutting scissors are. Thank God! Because I'm always loosing mine when I'm in zone. Having an auto thread trimmer also eliminates having to waste thread. The trimmers can also be programmed for when you’re doing decorative stitches.

REVERSE STITCHING
Simply hold the reverse stitch button to sew backwards and lock your stitches. It's that easy.

START/STOP BUTTON
You can unplug the foot controller/pedal and sew without it. The button with the arrow pointing up shows the status of your machine. It’ll show green when the machine is ready to sew and red when it’s not.

STITCH PATTERNS
The Juki Excite has 180 stitch patterns and can sew both letters and numbers. It comes with an easy pattern selection and you can save your selections to the machine. Using the arrow keys, you can easily select the pattern number you need and adjust the stitch length and width. The 180 stitch patterns also includes 4 overcasting stitches.

OTHER FEATURES
The Juki Excite comes with a compartment for your sewing tools, free hand sewing, instructional DVD, bright LED lights, and a hard shell carry case.

I made jumpsuit with this sewing machine. I'll blog about it soon.. So stay tuned. ;)

What I Wore: Aunt's Birthday/Wedding Anniversary

Happy Monday Loves! Hope you guys had a great weekend. Mine was really good. I thank God. Went to church on Friday, Auntie's Birthday/Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, Church and Fabric shopping on Sunday. :)

For my Aunt's event, I chose to make Butterick Pattern 5919 (b5919). It's a fully lined dress that has a fitted bodice with side front and side back seams. I combined view B (skirt) and view C (bodice). It also has a back button and zipper closure. Since I love pockets so much, I added them.

Tank + Navy

"always be the leading lady in your own life.."

Happy Thursday!
Hope you guys are having a productive week. It's been a busy week for me and I'm so glad tomorrow is Friday.

Here's a recap of what I did last weekend... One of my friends had a bridal shower on Saturday and the guests were asked to wear an all white outfit. Long story short (kinda), since I was busy with other things, I didn't have a chance to sew something to wear. So, I went on a hunt to find the perfect white dress (as always, I waited till the last minute.). After searching two of the biggest malls in the DMV, The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City and Arundel Mills, I came up empty handed. Not that I couldn't find a white dress, I did; but every time I see one, I think to myself, "I can make this. There's no way I'm paying for something I can make." Lol The Sewist Struggle.. Anyway, I ended up going home without a white dress and looked through my closet again. I ended up finding a dress I purchased from a boutique called Posh Nouveau, 3 years ago. Smh. All this time I could have just shopped my own closet and save myself time. I posted the dress I wore on my instagram page (@SewUrbane).

Here is what I wore (ootd) while running errands and around the mall last Saturday. I pre-ordered this tank from Pretty Girls Sew a couple of months ago. The tanks are no longer available but there are other items in our online store.
