What I Wore: Ada weds Uche

Hi Everyone! Happy Monday!! I just wanted to quickly review this butterick pattern before I forget and move on to my next project. I made the dress for one of my friend's wedding last week. Congratulations to the Newly Wed. :) This fabric was chosen by the bride as her Aso Ebi (I explained what Aso Ebi means HERE). As always (smh), I waited until the last minute to sew this dress. To me specific, I stayed up all night the day before the wedding sewing this dress. I'm so glad it came out okay and I was able to wear it.

One of the reasons why I waited last minute was because I couldn't decide what to make with this beautiful bordered fabric. I new that whatever make, I have to strategically place the borders and pattern pieces so that the dress will look effortless. At first I wanted to make a off-shoulder top and a skirt but I wasn't feeling it 100%, so I requested the help of my sew-sister, Coco of Needle Thread and a Prayer. We brainstormed and she suggested using B5987.

Pattern Review (B5987)

Pattern Description: Lined dress has bodice variations, side front seams on skirt and narrow hem. Bodice front pleated into two-piece sleeve, princess seams, and side zipper.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? I believe it does. Mine is just different because of my fabric choice.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, the only part that was a little tricky was when joining the lining to the bodice around the sleeves area. I'll suggest that you baste first, to make sure you're attaching the lining correctly.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I underestimated the time taken to sew the garment. At first, I like the pattern because it looks like you'll only need to cut out a few pieces and that's it. But after cutting everything out, including the lining, I realized that it will take me longer than I thought it would. But overall, I love the pattern especially the sleeves. And the fit was perfect.

Fabric Used: I used Ankara fabric. This ankara was definitely different from some of the ones I use. It was very sturdy and the right side of the fabric felt velvet-ish.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I didn't make any major alterations. I just took off about 3 1/2 inches at the hem, so it won't drag on the floor. Then after I finished the hem, I wished I hadn't remove that 3 1/2 inches because I wanted my shoes covered. Also to save time, I cut 2 pieces each of the bodice instead of 1 and self-lined the bodice (used the 2nd pieces as lining).
