What I Wore: Blogger Scene

Hello Everyone and Happy Labor Day to my U.S. readers!! Hope you guys enjoyed this long weekend as much as I did. Mine was pretty eventful, so all I decided to do nothing but rest. Trust me, I needed an "off day".. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen some of the pics of what I wore to the other events I attended (I'll blog them that later this week).

So last week, Coco and I attended an event called Blogger Scene. Blogger Scene is a networking cocktail party for bloggers in the DMV area. It was an awesome social event hosted by Ashley in DC and The Fashionably Broke. This was my second time attending.

As always, every time Coco and I attend an event together, we always make at least one item to wear to the event. I decided to make McCall's Pattern 6988 and Coco made Vogue Pattern 8872, which she blogged about (Here).

Pattern Review
About the Pattern: I went with M6988 because I thought it was more appropriate for a cocktail party. It's a semi-fitted dress with a self lined yoke, princess seams, and back zipper. I used a pink zipper to highlight the pink in my fabric even more.

The instructions were super easy to follow. I think this it would be perfect for a beginner sewer to follow. As long as you know how to install a zipper and sew on sleeves, you should be good.

My favorite part about the pattern/dress is the flounce or peplum hemline. I love garments that are fun and moves when you move. The dress was a perfect fit and hugs every curve nicely.. ;)

Fabric: I chose to use this Ankara fabric that was recently added to my stash. My bestie was in London last month and she send me picture of all these beautiful ankara fabric and told me I can only choose one. One? Can you imagine? lol Anyway, I ended up choosing this fabric because of all the colors on it. I was mesmerized by it. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen the video of one of the stores she went to when she was Ankara shopping. It was amazing. The fabric was made by Da Viva, Ultimate by Da Viva collection. It literally felt like paper, but I tried to rip it apart with my bare hand and I couldn't. It is just a strong as the other ankara I use.

Alteration: I didn't make any pattern alterations. The pattern was perfect just the way it is. I thought that maybe I was going to make the dress shorter and make the flounce longer, but after I did a pattern fit, I noticed that the length was just where I was wanted it. I'm definitely going to make this again.

Chatting it up with Beauty Blogger Sommar of Do It With Sass.

It was nice to meet Abbey of District Dress Up in person. We've only chatted via email.

So after Blogger Scene, Coco, Sommar, and I decided to do a photo shoot outside of the National Portrait Gallery.. Lol It was a fun night... Can't wait to do it again. If you are in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area and would love to attend the next blogger scene, follow them on instagram at @BloggerScene to get updates.

    1. Thank you! If you want it to loosen a little, you can hand wash it, but sometime it looses the shine and will look dull after wash. Depending on the type. This ankara was stiffer that I've ever used before, but I didn't pre-wash it before sewing it because I wasn't sure what if I'll like what it'll look like afterward. It sewed perfectly fine, just like any other ankara fabric. I even tried to tear it apart with my hands but it wouldn't rip. You can treat it just like any cotton fabric.

  3. i adore your dresses, as always!

do you wash your ankara? yours seems to keep the lovely stiff quality-- i left my last skirt unwashed to keep the effect, guess it's dry clean only now :)

    1. Thanks Oona! I don't pre-wash before sewing because some ankara loose their vibrant colors after wash. I've only steamed press ankara only once before sewing (Here --> http://www.sewurbane.com/2013/08/lined-ankara-jacket.html)but the fabric was still a little stiff. And, depending on the quality I either dry clean or hand wash after I've worn it. Some dry cleaners wouldn't take them because they're afraid the colors will run into each other. lol So I have to hand wash them..

  6. The dress is fantastic and is adorable on you. I just purchased this pattern over the weekend and can't wait to sew it up. I am curious about the fabric - Ankara - is it a woven?
