What I Wore / Travel: 60th Birthday Party in Florida

GRACE carried me here
and by Grace I'll carry on..

Hi everyone and Thank God for a new week.. Hope you all had a marvelous weekend. I went to Jacksonville, Florida this weekend to celebrate Ola's aunt's 60th birthday. It was a fun filled weekend and it was exciting to meet more of Ola's family. The day after the party, Ola and I went to Jacksonville beach, walked on the beach, and ate at this cool restaurant (forgot the name) where I had Jerky Mac and Cheese for the first time. It was goooood.

So, first of all, I can't believe I made this dress. It came out exactly how I pictured it. And the length was perfect, like the pattern was made just for me. The cobalt blue guipure lace I used was one of the fabric I purchased when I traveled to Nigeria. The only had a little over 1/2 a yard left and I love the color so I bought it. I knew exactly what I was going to make with it, I was just waiting on the perfect occasion. McCall's "Creat It" pattern allowed me to bring my idea to life, with minor adjustment because I wanted the scalloped edge to show.

Thanks to my Mom for helping with the fitting. :)

Pattern Review (M6838)
Pattern Description: Dresses have princess seams, close-fitting, underlined, lined, boned bodice and semi-fitted skirt variations, and invisible back zipper. Dresses also have circular skirt cut on crosswise grain.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? I think so.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, it was.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like that the pattern gives you the freedom to create your own design. There are 3 bodice variations, a belt, and also 3 variations of skirts.

Fabric Used: Red Satin from Joann's Fabric Store and Guipure Lace / Corded Lace

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I didn't make any major changes, I just added the lace my own way because I wanted the scalloped / decorative edges to show. I joined the lace and dress at the zipper seam and tacked it at the side and princess seams.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Definitely, the dress is perfect for wedding (guest) and other formal events, can't wait to make it again in a different style.

  1. Simply beautiful (you *and* the dress;) I looove the mermaid effect! I admit I didn't give this pattern much consideration because I'm not a huge fan of the high/low version on the envelope, but I really like the variation you chose:) Great colour & the lace overlay really works! Super flattering style on you:)
